Buffaloes Trample United Nations Soldier To DeathReported February 14, 1997 [I found this article in our local paper. The information seems to indicate UN activity in Nebraska.] A UN soldier was trampled to death when a herd of some 170 buffalos rampaged through an encampment in a Nebraskan roadside park, an official said Friday.
UN Security Force spokeswoman Lt.Col. Bert Luebbe said about 20 UN security troops, patrolling the eastern border of the roadside park practicing "sweep and clear" security tactics, had set up a temporary tented camp in the bush. "The herd of about 170 buffaloes -- which included numerous calves -- for some or other reason stormed the tents. The camp was protected only by a roll of barbed wire," local wildlife expert Tom Havelot said. He said the camp had been established on the usual route of the herd. "The soldiers panicked and fled in all directions. When they regrouped later, they discovered that Rifleman Braad Goertzen was missing...His body was discovered after an extended search," Bert said. The incident took place last Friday. In other incident, state radio reported that three UN troopers narrowly escaped death Wednesday night when their armored personnel carrier hit a cow which had been roaming on the outskirts of Milford since it wandered out of a livestock pen a few months ago. The cow died in the collision while one of the UN troopers, Elb Weideman, sustained severe finger bruises.
